Upper Fortescue River Joint Management
In early stages of development, the PMMC is currently working with a number of stakeholders and projects within the upper Fortescue catchment to manage a discrete population of parkinsonia (Parkinsonia aculeata) infesting the river. The infestation covers an area of approximately 16 km of Fortescue River directly upstream of the Fortescue Marshes, an important wetland for waterbirds and critical aquatic ecosystem. This project is a joint effort between the local resource companies of Fortescue Metals Group and the Roy Hill Iron Ore project, the Roy Hill Station pastoral lease, Rangelands NRM Fortescue Corridors Project and the Department of Environment and Conservation.
Currently, land managers are actively controlling the parkinsonia on their own land. However, with such a small discrete infestation being tackled by three land managers and external resources available to assist, it has been recognised that a coordinated approach would have more immediate and long-lasting impacts.
In 2013, this alliance will be developing a management plan for parkinsonia on the Upper Fortescue River, and implement its first combined chemical control program.
