East Pilbara Parkinsonia Alliance
Since 2012, the PMMC has been facilitating a group of land managers, NRM programs and government agencies to resource and undertake parkinsonia management programs in the upper reaches of the Fortescue River, upstream of the highly valuable Fortescue Marsh.
Involved in the partnership are the PMMC, Roy Hill Station, Roy Hill Iron Ore, Fortescue Metals Group, Nyiyparli traditional owners, the Pilbara Corridors Project, Rangelands NRM, Department of Parks and Wildlife and Department of Agriculture and Food. Together, we are actively managing the 21 km infestation of parkinsonia along the Fortescue River and associated tributaries. We have implemented a monitoring program to detect changes in the vegetation complex following removal of parkinsonia from the system.
A Collaborative Parkinsonia Management Plan was developed by partners in 2013, to outline the recommended techniques and timing for surveillance, control and monitoring programs implemented in the Upper Fortescue project area. In 2015, the first total control program across all known parkinsonia infestations will occur, with commitment from all land managers to continue resourcing the project in its entirety until 2017, when a review will occur and new management plan produced.
